Air Quality Worsens as Wildfire Smoke Moves In

North Bend residents woke up to smoke and ash in the air this morning due to wildfires in Eastern Washington.

"There is no local fire that is producing the smoke and ash. It is coming from the Jolly Mountain fire, Norse Peak fire and a few other smaller fires in Eastern Washington,” Eastside Fire and Rescue Captain Steve Westlake said in a press release today. “We appreciate the public being diligent with reports. If you do see flames, please report it to 911 and crews will check it out. The smell and ash will be more prevalent if you live on a hill.”

Air quality monitoring stations show air quality levels at unhealthy levels, especially for at-risk groups including the elderly and those with breathing issues. The smoke is expected to clear out of the region by Tuesday evening due to shifting wind patterns, according to the National Weather Service.

A combination of smoke and hot weather has a greater impact on those who are at risk. ESFR has the following tips:

- Keep hydrated
- If you have air conditioning, run it or go to places with AC that filters smoke particles.
- Take a day off from outside exercise if smoke affects you.
-Wear N95 masks to filter smoke particles. (Regular dust masks do not provide enough filter for smoke). Check online for N95 mask resources.
