Republic Services Working on Plans to Service City Customers Missed on Jan. 12th Due to Strike

news release image

4:30PM UPDATE

After a meeting with Republic Services operations representatives, the City is hopeful that there will be solid waste collections services as soon as possible for North Bend customers missed on Wednesday, January 12th.

Additional information will be available in the next 15-20 hours as Republic Services modifies plans based on new information about this dynamic situation.

Contingency plans and service updates will be posted on the City’s Republic Services website (https://www.republicservices.com/municipality/north-bend-wa) as soon as they are available. Residents will also be notified with updated information via robo-calls.

City of North Bend Republic Services collection routes run Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Monday and Tuesday customers were serviced this week, so two-thirds of City routes were collected as Republic continues to recover materials that were missed due to unsafe road conditions from recent snowstorms. Unincorporated North Bend residents may have different collection days.

The City and Republic’s goal is to now ensure that the one third of City customers missed today receive solid waste collection as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience during this unexpected service disruption. More updates will be provided Thursday morning, January 13, 2022.

ORIGINAL NEWS RELEASE

Republic Services informed the City of North Bend this morning that it would not be able to service customers on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, due to a temporary work stoppage/strike led by out of state union members. Customers missed may put out extra amounts on their next scheduled pick up day.

This latest strike-caused cancellation is unfortunate timing as it follows weeks of missed collections due to recent snowstorms. The City is aware this has created a hardship for many residents who may now go 4 weeks without garbage, recycling and yard waste collections.

The City is demanding that Republic Services provide monetary discounts to City of North Bend customers for December 2021 and January 2022 invoices; credits to the local dump transfer stations; and/or reimbursements of spent money at local transfer stations.

Residents are advised to retain any receipts if you choose to take your solid waste to a dump/transfer station. The City will be requesting that those costs be reimbursed to you.

The City is also working on an action plan to deal with the impacts of this Republic Services strike, including examining alternative ways to conduct collections.

We will provide updates as we receive additional information from Republic Services regarding continued collection cancellations.

Please visit the North Bend Republic Services website for additional info at www.republicservices.com/municipality/north-bend-wa

Republic Services can also be contacted at 206-682-9730 for residential customer service and 206-682-3037 for commercial customer service.

The City thanks residents for their  patience.
