September 2019 is National Preparedness Month, and planning ahead is the key to keeping yourself and your family safe if disaster strikes. National Preparedness Month encourages Americans to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, schools, and communities.

National Preparedness Month is recognized each September to promote family and community disaster and emergency planning now and throughout the year. The 2019 theme is "Prepared, Not Scared." Preparing with your family in advance will help everyone feel prepared, not scared if disaster strikes.

Here are a few tips for preparing for an emergency:

  • Stay informed about the different types of emergencies that could occur in your area and learn their appropriate responses.
  • Make a family emergency plan.
  • Build an emergency supply kit.
  • Get involved in your community by taking action to prepare for emergencies.
