At the May 2 North Bend City Council meeting, Mayor Rob McFarland proclaimed May 7 through 13 as Affordable Housing Week in North Bend. The mayor encourages public awareness in ensuring access to housing, noting that it is a fundamental function of effective planning.
This spring, the City of North Bend prepared an Economic Development Action Plan that demonstrates housing as a critical economic health issue in the community. In North Bend, 26 percent of all households spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing-related costs. This issue is especially pronounced among North Bend renter households, who are more likely than homeowners to spend more than 50 percent of their income on housing-related costs. Additional information can be found in the North Bend Housing Needs Assessment by visiting Housing Element webpage at www.northbendwa.gov.
Local resident, former Senior Pastor, and SnoValley Housing Task Force member James McEachran spoke on behalf of Affordable Housing Week at the Council meeting Tuesday evening. “I recognize the need and I commend the work you do in achieving bold, collaborative impacts,” he commented. “Thank you for mentoring and modeling a response for this critical need for attainable housing in this region, this county, and this community.”
